Who we are
About Project Momentum
Two decades of meeting the Twin Counties where they are — turning local knowledge, trusted relationships, and rigorous research into services that help families move forward.

Project Momentum, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, serving the neighboring communities of Edgecombe and Nash Counties. Our work is shaped by a simple conviction: the people closest to a challenge are closest to its solution.
For twenty years we have responded to the high-priority and emergent needs of our region — adapting as those needs change. We are a licensed mental health and substance use provider, a youth employment and community-mapping organization, and a trusted research partner. We work with people of all ages and backgrounds, and we are proud to serve rural African American communities that have too often been overlooked.
The data tells part of the story. Although Rocky Mount has a nearly equal distribution of white and Black residents, more than twice as many Black residents live in poverty. Just to the east, Edgecombe County — home to a population that is nearly 60% Black — carries some of the highest rates of food insecurity and diabetes in the state. We meet those realities with services, research, and relationships designed to last.
What sets Project Momentum apart is the way our work feeds itself. A substance use assessment becomes a pathway to recovery. A youth mapping job becomes a research career. A Healing Circle becomes a safer community. Each thread strengthens the next — building healthier communities, together.
